A National Resource for the UK Marine and Earth Science Community

The National Oceanographic Library is a national resource for the UK marine and earth science community, specifically supporting the research, education, teaching and enterprise of the National Oceanography Centre, the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton as well as the wider University of Southampton community.

It also has close links to other research libraries, particularly those of the Natural Environment Research Council. The library is a major resource for the UK marine and earth science community and houses some of the most significant material in recent marine science history. The library is open to the public for reference.

The Key Information

Students and staff from other universities can visit and, if applicable, borrow material using the SCONUL access scheme; however, they must book an appointment in advance, fill out a Community Membership form and have their proof of SCONUL membership with them.

Members of the public are welcome to visit, but they must also book an appointment in advance and fill out a Community Membership Form.

The National Oceanographic Library was officially formed over 100 years ago and ever since has been a trusted and reliable source of information regarding all methods of marine science research. Its vast collections includes books, reports, loose papers, expedition reports, journals, conference proceedings, maps, atlases and charts covering the subject areas of oceanography, deep-sea research and earth sciences including geology and geophysics.

The National Oceanographic Library is hosted at the National Oceanography Centre and is ran by the University of Southampton and the School of Ocean and Earth Science. It's available to visit to staff, students and members of the public by appointment only, with the materials available to read and study as a service to the marine and earth science community.
