Enabling and Collaborating with Industry Responsibly

The ocean has always played a key role in the world's industry for many years, where it first started off primarly as a food source, the ocean is now seen as a gateway to a sustainable future. While the ocean can provide resources and platforms to advance the world's economy, it should be done in a way that protects the fragile ecosystems and crucial processes that keeps the ocean healthy.

NOC supports and informs a wide range of industries on how they can work alongside the ocean sustainably and safely. Research is also focused on how existing activities can be managed, adapted and changed to actively support efforts to increase our awareness of how the ocean behaves and what we need to do to protect it.

NOC's Sustainable Marine Economy Mission

A sustainable marine (or “blue”) economy balances the growing use of ocean resources with the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems. As demand rises across industries like energy, shipping, aquaculture and tourism, there’s increasing pressure on the ocean to deliver economic growth, but without long-term harm to biodiversity, coastal communities or the climate.
