Unpredictable and Dangerous Threats
There are a wide variety of natural phenomena that originate from or are driven by the ocean which cause not only an immediate threat to coastal communities, but also to ecosystems. These include tsunamis, underwater volcanoes, storms, flooding and more.
The best way to help prepare for and manage these hazards is through detailed and comprehensive research. NOC's work revolves around disseminating the impacts of these events and informing policy makers and communities most effected by these hazards on how to best prepare or prevent them.
NOC's Hazards and Pollution Mission
Coastal zones are home to some of the world’s most densely populated areas. These regions rely on the ocean not just for food and livelihoods, but also for essential offshore infrastructure that supports entire industries, global trade and communications.
