Studying and Simulating the Ocean

Models are crucial in understanding our ocean. They create mathematical models of ocean systems such as circulation, and help to understand how these systems may change over time based on climate change driven influences. Often the data used by these models are collected by ocean observing systems and networks.

NOC is a world-leader in numerical modelling of the global oceans, shelf seas and ocean biogeochemistry, and also help to maintain and service some of the longest-running observational networks and tools in the ocean. These functions and platforms are vital in getting real-time data on the health of our ocean.

NOC's Climate Mission

Studying the ocean helps us understand what’s happening to our climate, where tipping points may be reached, and how the impacts will unfold across the globe—from rising sea levels to shifting weather extremes.
