Human and Industry Impacts

Every day the ocean is exposed to a range of different harmful pollutants either caused by human activity or other factors. Pollutants like plastics and other materials are causing damage that is still needs to be fully understood, and how we can stop pollutants entering the ocean is one of the most pressing questions for researchers.

NOC is working to not only identify these harmful pollutants, but also to fully understand how they affect and interact with the ocean. Alongside this, the research is also working to help coastal communities most affected by these pollutants on how they can play a major role in reversing any damage.

NOC's Hazards and Pollution Mission

Coastal zones are home to some of the world’s most densely populated areas. These regions rely on the ocean not just for food and livelihoods, but also for essential offshore infrastructure that supports entire industries, global trade and communications.
